Impact Report 2010

Communication professionals

Aims and Impacts

  • To provide first-class communication support to British Sign Language (BSL) users and increase the number of communication professionals

We delivered 16,699 sign language assignments to over 4,000 British Sign Language users. These assignments allowed sign language users to have equal access to health, education, legal, social and other council services.
We also provided communication support for British Sign Language users in the workplace and at social events. We delivered five courses during the year to increase the number of communication professionals. 16 students achieved registration status as communication professionals.

  • To develop communication services for those with English as a first language, focusing on text-based support and increasing lipreading services

We delivered 1,756 communications assignments, including speech-to-text reporters, electronic and manual notetakers and lipspeakers.
Our interpreter training resulted in an additional four Level 3 lipspeakers who can now register.
We campaigned to ensure that lipreading classes are widely available at little or no cost to the learner. As a result, five local authorities changed their policy towards lipreading classes, setting up new classes or reducing their fees.
